Forum: GratefulDead Subject: Billy and Mickey

Can anyone tell me why Billy and Mickey are not with Further this tour? Manchester will be my first show of this tour.
From the comments written, the Band can and does travel into the realms of IT,so they can bring together the Cosmic Tribe.
No dis-respect to the current drummers, but having lived with Billy and Mickey all my life, I miss their physical presence.
Can someone answer this question before I go to the show.
Thanks Big Wind

The current drummers are paid WAY less? Just a hunch. Another thought is that Billy is happy in Hawaii and the road life is rough on an old man.

and both have made comments in interviews over the past few years that they prefer to engage in new endeavors instead of revisiting the past.

his guitar playing is good but nothing will ever compare to the grateful dead, not the other ones not grateful dead, not furthur. nothing. and no one is better than the originals. i mean we all have our opinions but this comment seems real ignorant, and deeply disturbing

During the Dead tour of '09 both became increasingly bored with what they were doing. So comes the word from the street. Neither could justify hitting the road once more playing the same 100 songs over and over. With that I will testify that i enjoyed both Hampton and Fairfax with the 2 new guys... one on drums, the other hitting washboards and tamborines (among many other things) the entire evening.

What does not make sense to me, is the fact that for over forty years the Greatful Dead, extended family and Deadheads were aware of a certain Energy that Manifested at some shows.
I stopped trying to describe the insights that were experienced, sometimes individually, sometimes COLLECTIVELY.
The sixties are long gone, and this planetary darkness has all but extinguished the flame.
I am not talking about those who " HAVE SEEN THE LIGHT"
darkness does not exist within The Cosmic Tribe, but for those of other tribes crazy shit is happening.
"OUR JOB IS TO SHED LIGHT NOT TO MASTER" I though that Billy and Mickey understood what was at stake.
I know that they can project their Love and Energy to the shows, we all can. But it's nice to know that when the Band was in never-never land that Mickey and Billy could take the rest of the boys in a new direction. LIKE RESCUE THE NIGHT.
One last though, they never play the same songs, the lyrics are the same ( most of the time,I can remember some unusual words coming from Bobby and Jerry) how they are interpreted is different each show. Its the same for the Band, they are getting their minds blown away just as we are, they just give it their best shot and then what happens is a mystery, always has been always will be, that's the nature of the IT.

you said a lot in there and i think i get you.

you are addressing the idea of one party or another being "BORED".

for me, it is very clear that PHIL is not bored, and bobby does not seem bored.

and i think it is not the notes so much as the nature of the even itself.

every night they walk onstage as Furthur they get to have that reciprocation with the audience over the collective effort involved in getting off.

they recognize the Golden Nugget: when THEY are there and WE are there.... anything can happen.

it is really true, and they live on the crest of this truth... surfing that little delight that is all getting off on this big thing together in a relatively intimate way as compared to normal life.

not that BILL and MICKEY don't recognize the value there, they are just finding it somewhere else, or putting their energy in other directions at this time -- please try your call again later.

Thanks for this update. Interesting especially since it was reported that each band member picked the set list from night to night. The drummers had their nights too. I guess it wasn't enough to keep them interested. Overall how is this band sounding? I have only heard the Shakedown from the NYE show so I can't comment as a whole. Not the greatest version but the one thing I noticed was a very fast tempo and some energy

Now this is just from the rumor grapevine, but part of the reasons for no Billy & Mickey is that during the "Dead" tour , Billy got bored ( he has said so, his own words), but supposedly, perhaps in response to this , started partying pretty hard etc.
The rumor I heard about Mickey, and this sounds like something out of "Spinal Tap", is that his "old lady" was with them, and a real pain in the ass !
Thus, because of these ,and other reasons , they were not invited on the Furthur run .
Now I have idea how true any of this is, but it the supposed Mickey case, it is pretty funny !
Frankly,Billy sounds better, and happier , with his own band ; but I hope they play all together again , when the mood is right .

Thanks Dudley Dead,

In retrospect, I should never have asked the question.
Thanks for the responses, sorry for getting you-all involved
in my stupidity.
It is what it is,the Boys know what they are doing.
"Just cause its said now, that don't mean that its true"
I'm off to the Lots in search of The Holy Grail.
See you at the show.
